Education:
University of York
1993 – 1996
BSc Economics Hons
This was where my legendary reputation as an academic was confirmed.
Bournemouth FE College
1991 – 1993
I lived in the red light district and was afraid to go outside. As a result, I put some effort in and therefore did quite well with the A levels.
Weymouth Grammar School
1983 – 1988
I was the first year of GCSEs. To prove their value to a skeptical public they were handed out like toffees.
Hobbies and Interests:
At university, I re-kindled my school boy enthusiasm for kayaking. Multiple wilderness and exploratory white water descents in all corners of the world followed. I was selected as a member of the GB Freestyle kayaking team in 2002. From 1999 – 2005 I ran a popular kayaking website, the award-winning thamesweirproject.co.uk, which included news, features, blogs and a forum. I now do a bit of sailing, mountain biking, hockey: you know, the usual.
I live in Maidenhead, in the Thames Valley, UK.

The things you find on the internet !!!
Came across your blog while having my daily browse on the UKRGB site and thought i’d say hello !! All still fine and settled in sunny York (well minus 4 this morning).Still selling wine, still boating and Ian Bate is living next door but 3 which is good and wonderful!! Really interested in the pics on the Tees beck.I posted on UKRGB a bit ago asking about a number of the Tees becks (inc’ the one you were on) but no one seemed to know anything (or they were that good they did n’t want to share !).I tend to paddle a fair bit with Bristol CC still (Ben’s in semi retirement due to a 2 year old and another on the way in March) and have taken to paddling obscure ditches in the SW (East Okement in Devon being a artic’ memorable day out !!) and South Wales. Made my journalistic debut in Paddles this month (whitewater mag not the Australian spanking publication) with my Big Ditch article (which even name checked your good self) and will put pen to paper (finger to key ?) later in the year as we’re off to Nepal for a couple of weeks (Sun Kosi and probably a few other one day trips). Any useful tips or advice about Nepal greatly appreciated.
Hope you’re ok and doubtless i’ll bump into you on a river at some point
Cheers
Mike
Good to hear from you, Mike!
That beck near the Tees is short but good and is hardly any extra bother if HF-LF is running well.
If you’re interested in good class 4, not too far from Khatmandu, the Bhote Kosi is great.
I’ll read your article forthwith.
Dear James,
Have just read your site with my son William. You are truly one of us! But I’ll bet we are more skilled at time wasting than even you are.
We must be related . Only genes can explain the uncanny parallels. Have you ever investigated your family tree?
Cairn na Cuinha
