Oh cripes, yes, bendy buses. They're rotters. I forgot to put in a specific learning about those - 8. Don't try to overtake a bendy bus unless you are completely certain it will not start moving as you'll never get passed once it gets going as it's 300 miles long and you'll just end up not knowing what to do and either have to stop in the middle of the road in the hope that the taxi behind it will take pity on you or go round the wrong way of a traffic island and hope to God there is nothing coming. Terrible, bendy buses. Terrible.

James,

Having cycled in London for a number of years I agree with most of what you said. My only real disagreement is around bus drivers - especially bendy busses. The drivers of these seem to forget just how long their vehicle is - i shared my route home with the number 18 bendy bus route and have lost cost of the number of incidents and near misses experienced as a consequence of being overtaken by one of these buses which then proceeded to pull back in immediately in front of me!

8) Cycle as far as possible away from parked cars as they might fling a door open at any moment. Also, watch out at traffic lights for passengers jumping out of cars with no warning.

See this is why Montague bikes are so great. My folding Swissbike LX is full-sized so I don't feel like I look weird riding it. And it's so easy to fold and unfold, w/ no adjustments needed.

You forgot to mention that folding bikes make you look desperately uncool. Mine's a Dahon and, whilst fortunately relatively noise-free so far, has a saddle fixing clip that needs to have its tension re-set every time I unfold the bike. In order to avoid the indignity of it sinking to the ground as soon as you sit on it, the clip has to be set so tight that Popeye himself would be hard-pressed to close it. Because I never seem to get the saddle height right first time, I end up cycling with my knees around my ears because I don't have the strength to wrestle with the clip again. In principle, folding bikes are an appealing concept, but the reality leaves a lot to be desired.
