I understand what server/storage virtualisation does, I just don’t get how it does it.

Actually, this post came about because the account execs, who usually rely on me to explain the various technologies we have to deal with, asked me what virtualisation is and how it works. I hit the buffers quite quickly:

    AEs. “What is virtualisation?”
    JF. Offers correct answer
AEs. “How does it do that?”
JF. Offers correct high level overview
AEs. “How can different OS swap between servers, or be on many at the same time? Where does the software actually sit if it can swap between platforms? What happens if one server breaks, does the software disappear?
JF. “It’s a ghost that lives in the server. Run along now.”

As one of the said execs, I feel I ought clarify. There was certainly no to-ing and fro-ing and detailed explanations from James (if there had been, I don’t think we’d have been able to come up with such a detailed question in response!). The actual conversation was something along the lines of:

AE: “So what actually is virtualisation?”

General: “Kind of thingy where every thing is doled out as and when its needed, blah blah blah”

AE: “So how does it work?”

JF: “Erm, doh diddley doh doh. Er, the ghosts in the server…?”

    Thank you.
